From the very beginning, something didn’t quite sit right with me. The idea of how a young girl from eastern Europe could end up living with an affluent American family without any kind of verification – you know, to confirm her identity and connection – felt incredibly far-fetched. While I did find elements of the film enjoyable, that lack of believability lingered in my thoughts throughout as we witness “Esther” (Isabelle Fuhrman delivers a noteworthy performance) mature into something sinister, creating chaos for the "Coleman" family, who are still dealing with their own loss. The premise itself is intriguing: an adult, someone ruthless and emotionally fragile, pretending to be a child and exploiting innocence as a means of manipulation – that’s handled skillfully by everyone involved, both in front of and behind the camera. The cold setting and John Ottman's music also add to the overall feeling of dread as anyone who opposes her meets a sudden end. She even manipulates a younger, impressionable person into helping her! It’s a textbook illustration of blending in while concealing something dark, and it’s definitely among the more impactful psychological horror films I’ve encountered.
