Tilda Swinton delivers a striking performance in this account of the Tudor noble, Orlando, who, at the behest of the infatuated Queen Elizabeth (played by Quentin Crisp), resists aging. The film traces his journey through various experiences—romances, and ultimately shows how he adjusts – physically – as England transforms into Britain and he eventually gains independence. His time serving as an ambassador in the Middle East, his efforts to protect his family’s land when suspicions arise, and the appearance of a child all contribute to this fascinating Virginia Woolf character that resists easy explanation. It's a narrative about people and their resistance to accepting necessary shifts as circumstances and the world relentlessly evolve around them. Historical figures like Othello and King James I appear throughout this unusual and captivating timeline, which is visually rich, lively, and creatively imaginative; this adaptation does stretch the book’s chronology into more contemporary times. While "Orlando" develops some aspects of gender fluidity, they function as a pathway within the story rather than being overtly significant to what happens. It's that very ambiguity that slowly becomes clearer, almost as if the immortal character is emerging from obscurity – and Sally Potter maintains a sharp focus on this for the ninety minutes of film we are shown. Judging it proves difficult; it’s likely to resonate with viewers in many different ways, which ultimately makes it quite enjoyable to watch.
