Original Sin (2001) initially captivates with an interesting premise, attractive visuals, and some nicely composed expansive shots that create a timeless, almost surreal atmosphere. The filmmaking feels secure during the opening section, drawing viewers into a world of secrets and romance; however, as it continues, the movie becomes somewhat inconsistent. There are instances where the narrative successfully creates suspense, but these moments are undermined by certain scenes that seem contrived and don’t quite align with how the characters develop. The writing is overly dramatic, emphasizing themes of fixation and deception, although at times it seems to be striving for shock value more than substance. Angelina Jolie gives a graceful performance that enhances even the less successful aspects of the story. Antonio Banderas also performs adequately, but his character appears more like a responder than someone actively shaping events.
