I’m generally happy to watch anything with Lesley Manville in it, and Liam Neeson being involved was an added pleasure. I think this is a good, dependable movie. It's not revolutionary by any means, but it’s well-crafted, boasting two very capable central performances. Both actors felt like ordinary people, which made their portrayal of a couple convincing. You won’t find over-the-top emotional outbursts or excessive displays of sentimentality here. There were moments of frustration, as you would anticipate in an established relationship where individuals feel comfortable enough to occasionally make hurtful remarks because of the underlying affection and trust. There was a scene where Neeson's character began talking with someone who was connected to another patient his wife had been assisting, and it brought to mind that wonderful film, The Doctor, starring William Hurt. Although the stories are completely different, there’s something similar about witnessing a person interacting with someone facing an even more difficult situation; it felt authentic. The actors in smaller roles did a satisfactory job, but ultimately this felt like a story centered on just two people. Thankfully, those leads were up to the task.
