Biographies often run into trouble when they unintentionally inject the author’s personal viewpoints, presenting them as established truths and attempting to soften the portrayal of an individual or group. While Oppenheimer was undeniably a gifted scientist, he also held communist beliefs—a fact supported by considerable documentation, articles, and his own admissions of admiration for communist ideologies and social principles. He participated in communist organizations, subscribed to their publications, provided them with financial support on a regular basis, and many people close to him, including his brother, wife, mistress, and even numerous students, were also associated with communism. He certainly posed a security concern, and some might even characterize his actions as treasonous; however, the movie depicted a misleading picture of Oppenheimer as an unfairly treated researcher forced to suffer for the greater good of preventing nuclear weapons development.
