Christopher Nolan’s newest film rises to meet the demands of portraying an extraordinary person, resulting in what is easily his finest achievement so far. This three-hour exploration of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer's life—the physicist who led the Manhattan Project and is often called the Father of the Atomic Bomb—offers a detailed look at a brilliant but frequently enigmatic and somewhat inexperienced man who undertook an obviously perilous undertaking, later grappling with moral questions about what he had brought into being. Covering many years in the scientist’s history, the story follows his work on “the gadget” and the repercussions he faced due to his left-leaning political views and attempts to contain the consequences of nuclear weapons development. While the film feels a bit stretched out, particularly during the first and last segments, its length is understandable—and defensible—given the desire to present a complete account of Oppenheimer’s journey. The production quality is exceptional across the board, with especially impressive cinematography, an evocative original musical score, and remarkable sound design that creates a genuinely impactful experience for viewers. The story is wonderfully presented thanks to the film's excellent cast, including Murphy, Matt Damon, Tom Conti, Benny Safdie, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, and notably Robert Downey Jr., who gives an exceptional supporting performance revealing talents I wasn’t aware he had. “Oppenheimer” stands out as the best film of the summer movie season, and perhaps even of 2023 so far. It makes a powerful statement and reinforces a lesson that bears repeating—a somber reminder of the responsibility we all must avoid embracing, just as Oppenheimer was compelled to do.
