Filipe Manuel Neto on Open Your Eyes

10/10 · Jan 3, 2023

This is a remarkable movie where dreamlike sequences, reality, deception, and fantasy intertwine. The story centers on César, a young man from Spain who appears to have it all: financial security, companionship, and romantic opportunities—though he consistently shies away from serious relationships. While attempting to dodge an awkward situation at his birthday celebration, he encounters Sofia, an alluring and sharp woman who quickly draws him in. His seemingly perfect existence crumbles when a deliberately staged car accident leaves him with severe facial disfigurement. The psychological, emotional, and physical challenges resulting from such trauma alone could have formed the basis of a compelling film; however, Amenábar expands upon this by incorporating explorations of dreams, illusion, and memory. The narrative is relentlessly intense, looping back on itself to the point where it becomes difficult to discern what’s real versus César's dreams or illusions. The conclusion is genuinely unsettling. Despite not appearing to have a massive budget, the film boasts a strong ensemble cast. Eduardo Noriega delivers an impressive dramatic performance and proves to be an excellent lead actor. Penélope Cruz, who was gaining recognition as she transitioned to Hollywood, remains a youthful and attractive performer, displaying sincerity in her role. Chete Lera and Fele Martínez provide solid supporting performances, and even Najwa Nimri, portrayed as the antagonist, excels in her part. A significant portion of the narrative unfolds through flashbacks accompanying César’s sessions with his psychiatrist, a technique that proves exceptionally well-executed and impactful. The film skillfully integrates its themes, maintaining balance across them all, and the dialogue feels natural and authentic. Effective set design, costumes, and location choices contribute to the film's visual appeal, while the cinematography makes excellent use of Madrid’s bright sunlight and striking blue skies—a contrast with the pervasive shadows that seem to surround the protagonist.
