If you’re hoping for a straightforward shark movie, prepare to be let down. Open Water brought Force Majeure (2014) to mind, and centers on the mounting strain between a married couple who find themselves abandoned by their boat in a reef location. Inspired by an unusual real-life event, it's more about the disorientation, anxiety, and intense dread of becoming shark food—surrounded by sharks, stingrays, and barracudas—than about actual attacks, which makes for a somewhat lackluster experience, particularly if you’re a fan of shark movies like I am. The film is low on sudden scares or excitement; this absence is worsened by some strange humming music and camera work that resembles found footage. However, there are genuinely excellent conversations laced with humor and insight, and these moments are bolstered by an underlying sense of suspense, so it’s still worth seeing if you appreciate films about people struggling to survive in nature.
