I recently watched this movie after seeing another Portuguese film that seems to have taken inspiration from it. It turned out to be considerably better than I initially thought, even though its claim of being based on true events feels like a deceptive marketing tactic. Despite that, the film is well-crafted, features a compelling narrative, and provides decent entertainment. The entire story unfolds at sea, aboard an expensive yacht. Six friends who have known each other since childhood reunite for what appears to be a pleasant outing, but things quickly go awry when they all find themselves in the water. Their attempt to return to the boat is complicated by the realization that nobody brought the ladder. These kinds of movies often rely on characters behaving foolishly, leading to disastrous consequences, with the most sympathetic character inevitably being rescued. I anticipated nothing different, but I was pleasantly surprised by a film that not only incorporates this familiar formula but also transcends it, offering entertainment and a story that manages to be somewhat believable, populated by reasonably well-developed characters. It isn’t an outstanding piece of cinema, but it's noticeably superior to many similar productions. I believe the movie's success is largely due to the skilled writing team involved and Hans Horn's capable direction, which allowed him to effectively manage the actors. Susan May Prat delivers a convincing performance and stands out as the strongest actress in the film, although Eric Dane and Richard Speight Jr. also do commendable work. From a technical standpoint, it’s quite impressive given the budget limitations and other challenges faced during production. Being an independent project, made outside of major studios and without massive financial backing, it's a remarkably competent piece of filmmaking, showcasing excellent cinematography, editing, music, sound effects, and effective use of the filming location.
