The story centers on a disagreement between "Baxter," played by Michael Gambon, who doesn’t appreciate herds of cattle wandering and eating grass across the land. This creates problems for "Boss" (Robert Duvall) and his companions: "Charley" (Kevin Costner), "Mose" (Abraham Benrubi), and the character known as "Button" (Diego Luna). The conflict becomes apparent when "Mose" goes into town to get supplies and doesn’t return. Concerned, the two men leave their child to watch the cows while they search for their friend. They discover “Mose” beaten up and under the care of Sheriff "Poole" (James Russo), who is clearly controlled by Baxter's harsh authority. The situation becomes complicated when "Charley" and "Sue" (Annette Bening)—who resides with the town doctor (Dean McDermott)—develop feelings for each other, making it harder to simply leave. Determined to maintain his oppressive power, “Baxter” and his allies launch an attack that will force the old friends to dust off their guns if they want to protect themselves, their cattle, and their two companions from a man who won’t hesitate and recognizes that the fearful residents of the town are unlikely to step in. Costner performs adequately both behind and in front of the camera, and along with some lovely cinematography, delivers an old-fashioned western that lets Duvall portray "Boss" thoughtfully and interestingly. The romance—such as it is—also benefits from Bening’s performance, which is equally restrained and not overly emotional, adding more substance to a story familiar to fans of the genre, though perhaps not presented in quite this more character-driven way. I didn't entirely connect with Gambon's acting initially, but his performance improves as the film progresses toward its conclusion, effectively culminating the slowly built suspense. The movie’s length is excessive, but it remains a well-made film that deserves to be seen.
