I’m not going to die without knowing who you are. It might just be my personal feeling, but Open Range feels like a timeless Western that holds up even after seeing it again and again. It's not perfect—Western experts will probably find fault with things like the hats or how realistic the gunfights seem—but I think we should appreciate having a movie in today’s world that is clearly made with care and affection by the director. The story itself follows a straightforward plot about those struggling against powerful people who want everything for themselves, basically showing an abuse of power. What makes it special is how interesting and relatable the characters are. Very quickly, Kevin Costner gets you invested in the main characters; you understand them without needing to know their whole backstory, which I think is quite a feat. The movie develops these characters well enough to keep things engaging without dragging on, and it's only toward the very end that you realize you’ve been watching a genuinely human and honest Western film. Most of the actors do a good job here; Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner have a great chemistry together as the two leads, while Annette Bening is wonderful in her role as the main female character. It's disappointing to me that Michael Gambon, playing the villain, isn’t used enough and feels like a missed opportunity. An actor of his caliber should know better than to act so broadly within this story. We understand there needs to be a bad guy, but exaggerated expressions don't quite work here. I was surprised that director Costner didn't give Gambon more to do. Even with those issues, I consider the film a wonderful experience because it is—a movie that will have you cheering and booing along with what’s happening on screen, and for the most part, the quality of the work is outstanding. Some of the shots are beautiful, Costner's use of close-ups is particularly well done, and the final shootout is one of the best in Western film history. Overall, it's a modern movie that fits comfortably alongside the classics from Hollywood’s golden age. 9/10
