I’m not going to die without knowing who you are. It’s just my take, but Open Range feels like a timeless Western that holds up well even after multiple viewings. It's not perfect, according to those who study Westerns—and some might criticize the hats or how realistic the gunfights seem—but I think we should appreciate having a film in today’s world that is clearly made with care and admiration by the director. The story follows a straightforward plot about ordinary people standing up against powerful figures who want everything for themselves, essentially acting like tyrants. What makes it special is how interesting and relatable the characters are. Within a short time, Kevin Costner really gets you invested in the main characters; you understand them without needing a lot of explanation, which I think is quite an accomplishment. The movie develops their personalities well enough to keep things engaging without dragging on, and it’s not until the very end that you realize you've been watching a genuinely human and honest Western film. Most of the cast does a good job; Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner have a great dynamic together as the two leads, full of quiet understanding and experience. Annette Bening is wonderful in her significant female role, embodying beauty and energy. Unfortunately, I have to say that Michael Gambon’s performance as the villain feels wasted—he's not used enough, and it’s disappointing. An actor of his caliber should know better than to play things so broadly for this kind of story. We understand there needs to be a bad guy, but exaggerated expressions don't quite work here. It was surprising that director Costner didn’t find more ways to use Gambon effectively. Even so, I consider it a wonderful film because it is—a movie that will have you cheering and booing at the same time, and for the most part, the quality of the work is outstanding. Some of the shots are stunning, and Costner's close-up framing is excellent. The final shootout is one of the best in Western history. Overall, it’s a modern film that fits comfortably alongside the classics from the golden age. 9/10
