The reason for my choice is clear. Captain Richard Lance finds himself unfairly blamed for the death of a popular Lieutenant. When he's given an opportunity to lead a small group of soldiers to the defeated Fort Invincible, he accepts without hesitation. He chooses men who openly dislike him, those he believes have significant flaws in their personalities. Lance and this small band must defend the fort against Apache attacks until help arrives. With dwindling water supplies and constant infighting among them, it’s looking more and more like a hopeless mission, one from which they might not all survive. I've heard some claim that this is one of Gregory Peck’s weaker performances, pointing to its modest production values and somewhat rigid direction. I disagree; in my opinion, it’s considerably more captivating than the highly regarded *Rio Bravo*, released eight years prior. While Howard Hawks’ film is undoubtedly more polished technically, I maintain that *Only The Valiant* offers a better cast performance and greater entertainment value. Gregory Peck, Ward Bond, Gig Young, Lon Chaney Jr., Neville Brand & Warner Anderson all deliver strong performances, contributing to a dramatic and absorbing story. It develops as an intense exploration of character, showcasing men who deeply distrust each other but are united by their shared dislike for their commanding officer. A notable scene shows Lance (Peck is admirably restrained) exposing the flaws in each soldier’s character—one is a bully, another deserted, one drinks too much, and so on—and it's at this point that the film truly becomes a compelling study of personalities. The violence is also quite graphic; director Gordon Douglas doesn't shy away from showing the brutality inherent in the story, and I challenge you not to feel your pulse quicken as the Apache’s begin their war cries before launching their attacks. From observing these fascinating characters trapped in a tense situation, to the exciting final battle with the Gatling Gun, this film succeeds on many levels. 8/10
