There are elements here that should appeal to my tastes, but ultimately the rhythm didn’t work for me. *Only God Forgives* presents a very bleak and visually intense experience, with the cinematography doing a great job of establishing the atmosphere. Ryan Gosling delivers a performance reminiscent of his role in *Drive*, another Nicolas Winding Refn film from 2011. Kristin Scott Thomas is dependable, although I kept thinking Toni Collette would have been better suited for her part. Vithaya Pansringarm brings a sense of calm to his portrayal. I did find some enjoyment in it, but it didn’t quite reach the level of something I truly loved. The way it unfolds feels disjointed; it felt like observing individual incidents rather than following a complete story. It isn't that the scenes don't connect, but each one seems too self-contained in its storytelling approach.
