Dark Jedi on Only God Forgives

5/10 · Jul 1, 2018

This film is undeniably interesting from an artistic standpoint. The primary reason to watch, in my view, comes down to its visuals, which are truly exceptional. However, after some time, the intensely red and frequently strange imagery starts to feel monotonous. The plot itself is as described in the promotional material; there isn't much more to it than that, serving mainly to connect the director/writer’s artistic visions. It's a fairly graphic film. The veteran police officer, Chang, has several chances to employ different bladed weapons—primarily his sword—against numerous criminals, and these moments are often depicted with considerable detail. Regarding the actors and their performances, they are quite good considering the nature of the movie. That being said, much of the acting involves characters simply gazing at each other in silence. I struggled to determine a suitable rating for this film. Based solely on the visuals, it would warrant a very high score, but judging by everything else, it would be considerably lower. Ultimately, while I recognized and appreciated the artistry, I didn’t particularly enjoy the movie overall; therefore, I'm giving it 5 out of 10 stars.
