Jean Arthur immediately impresses as the practical "Bonnie," who shows up in a secluded South American village. The setting is small but vibrant, and “Carter” (Cary Grant) operates an air-freight business from a landing strip that’s more potholes and water than solid ground! “Dutchy" (Sig Ruman), the charming owner of the local bar, supports his venture, and they're nearing a crucial evaluation period for their mail service contract – one essential to their survival. Trouble arrives in waves; "Carter" suddenly finds himself with a new pilot named "Bat” (Richard Bathelmess), who carries considerable personal problems. These issues also bother “Kid” (Thomas Mitchell), Carter’s friend, who is dealing with his own concerns—his vision isn't as sharp as it once was. Their delivery route passes through a dangerous canyon known for unpredictable weather, and with their limited number of planes and pilots decreasing, the odds seem stacked against keeping the business afloat. This isn't really one of Cary Grant’s most memorable performances; he performs adequately but the chemistry between him and an excellent Arthur is enjoyable to watch. The plot does meander a bit when his former flame “Judy” (Rita Hayworth) appears—and it turns out she’s married to their new pilot, no less! Fortunately, Howard Hawks prevents things from becoming overly sentimental; instead, it's more of a hazy aerial adventure where the romantic elements are secondary. The film also provides an interesting look at how risky those early air missions could be, with aircraft that were essentially constructed from lightweight materials and vulnerable to rapidly changing weather conditions. It’s a well-constructed narrative featuring a dependable cast, and I found it entertaining.
