James Cagney delivers an exceptional portrayal within a movie that doesn't connect with audiences today. C.R. MacNamara oversees Coca-Cola’s bottling operations in Germany; he’s a determined individual striving for advancement, aiming to become the head of European operations. His progress is interrupted when Wendell P. Hazeltine’s teenage daughter unexpectedly appears and he’s tasked with supervising her during a two-week tour across Europe. I often wonder what it would have been like to see this film when it was first released in 1961, because I'm certain I would have laughed out loud at the humor of that era. Filled with dialogue and jokes reflecting the political climate, One, Two, Three exhibits all the characteristics associated with a Billy Wilder/I.A.L. Diamond production. However, watching it now reveals that the jokes feel stale and worn; while the film’s rapid tempo is remarkable – almost overwhelming to the viewer – it ultimately feels like an antiquated curiosity. Despite featuring a truly outstanding performance from James Cagney, the movie remains consistently engaging, but its appeal is undeniably tied to the year 1961, despite the quality of the lead actor and director's work.
