I kept thinking while watching this, maybe it would have worked better as a play with Danny Dyer involved instead of being a movie. He plays "Jimmy Banks," an agent who isn't exactly on the up-and-up, and his only client is currently facing rape charges in High Court. Jimmy has gotten him a really good contract, but that’s all dependent on him walking free. At the same time, his daughter calls to remind him about her birthday—something he completely forgot—revealing that his thoughtlessness extends beyond just his job. She's close friends with a promising young player named "Jerome," and Jimmy offers to get him placed at a top club in Madrid. Even more money for everyone! Then the phone rings again, this time from someone blackmailing him, who seems to have recordings that could send both the footballer to jail and potentially drag Jimmy into it as well. As he goes back and forth between confidence, swagger, and then drunken worry, things start to unravel… It's pretty clear who’s making those threatening calls; there are plenty of hints for the audience to piece together—the whole thing feels a little too straightforward, really. Dyer is excellent though, giving a wide range of emotions as his loud-mouthed "Jimmy" carries the story for ninety minutes, and also throwing some shade at how international football operates. He’s an engaging performer, even if he isn't exactly known for his versatility; he manages to project unpleasantness without making us dislike him, and there's a final development that almost makes you feel sorry for him. I’m not entirely sold on the idea of “not knowing because you didn’t want to know,” but it’s definitely an impressive attempt that is worth seeing.
