I completely fell for this film; it was a gradual process. The challenge was to create something like an Indiana Jones movie with very little money, using relatively unknown performers—many of whom had minimal acting experience. The story should be straightforward (a man encounters a woman early on), but feel genuine. The characters need to be people you can connect with, and there needs to be humor woven in. Then, turn it into a musical featuring at least ten songs. Oh, and somehow make sure someone gets an Oscar. This film accomplished all of that, and I’m truly astonished by it. Hansard and Irglova are so convincing—I had no idea they possessed such limited experience on screen. Their music together is beautiful, deeply emotional, and authentic. It's the kind of musical people should be watching now, rather than something like Hamilton, which has been excessively praised, or La-La Land, which feels self-absorbed, or Cats, a complete disaster. At its core, it’s simply about love, music, and genuine human connection. I adore it—even though it made me cry. Learning more about the film brought fresh tears to my eyes: there's a scene near the end where Guy asks Girl if she loves her husband. She replies, "No. I love you," without subtitles, so Guy doesn’t understand what she says. If you appreciate movies that stir your emotions and make you feel something, you should see this one. See it right away.
