The film’s initial pairing of vampire trends with the standard 1980s romantic comedy results in an amusing, though not particularly serious, spoof centered around vampires. Lauren Hutton is effective as the seductive vampire character, and Cleavon Little portrays a flamboyantly gay version of Renfield to complement her overtly sexual Countess persona. Carrey takes on this role with a degree of restraint. There's none of the over-the-top behavior associated with Ace Ventura to be found here. His shift from an ordinary adolescent into a morose, troubled vampire is marked by bursts of wild humor as he comes to terms with his new reality. As is common in many 1980s comedies, the story culminates in a planned dance sequence and a conventional pursuit through the vampire's residence. While it’s not a groundbreaking or profoundly insightful film, Once Bitten provides an enjoyable experience that highlights the performers’ abilities within a charmingly kitschy 1980s framework.
