A charming depiction of a lovely city has arrived on screen. Like it often does, the narrative at the heart of On the Town isn’t something to be overly enthusiastic about, but it emerges as one of MGM's most enjoyable and lighthearted offerings. It’s a musical filled with humor, thanks to its gifted performers and vocalists. The film, which was taken from a popular stage show, is accurate in acknowledging that it feels old-fashioned and that not every song is exceptional. While pointing out the dated aspects isn't always productive, some viewers may find certain stereotypical and sexist portrayals jarring. However, if you can simply go along with it and appreciate the time period from which it originates, then this is largely a cheerful and inspiring film. So join the men and women as they dance and sing their way through New York City. 8/10
