Olympus Has Fallen functions essentially as a contemporary reimagining of Die Hard, swapping out Bruce Willis for Gerard Butler and Nakatomi Plaza with the White House. Gerard Butler delivers an adequate portrayal of Mike Banning. Antoine Fuqua managed reasonably well given the material at hand, and there are some intense action sequences that nearly make it worthwhile. However, the film’s biggest problem lies in its uninspired script. Practically nothing about Olympus Has Fallen feels plausible. An aircraft manages to breach protected airspace near Washington D.C., unleashing a barrage of gunfire on the White House. It requires fifteen minutes for any armed assistance to show up. The President jeopardizes the safety of an allied country during a situation involving a personal connection. I could continue listing examples indefinitely. And on and on. Because of this, experiencing the film can be somewhat unpleasant. You’ll likely find yourself voicing criticisms at the screen. Despite that, the action is captivating. It's recommended to see this movie and then attempt to erase it from your memory. 5.5/10.
