This film centers on two significant female characters, creating a difficult choice for the young "Olivia" (played by Marie-Claire Olivia), who must decide where her loyalties lie! She’s recently arrived at an exclusive finishing school in France, where she quickly connects with the school's charming and mysterious teacher, “Miss Julie” (Edwige Feuillère). However, there’s also “Miss Cara" (Simone Simon), who seems to have a vague ailment that leads many students to constantly fuss over her and cater to her whims. She isn’t pleased about this new arrival from another country and doesn't appreciate the competition... To say the least, an engaging sense of unease is building, with a hint of something like attraction emerging as these women engage in what appears to be very proper and refined displays of rivalry. While there are some elements dealing with growing up, I found myself most drawn to the carefully portrayed games of jealousy. The story avoids unnecessary male characters, allowing the intensity of longing, desire, and betrayal to take center stage, demonstrating how skillful writing and good cinematography can convey tension and intense feeling more effectively than nudity or vulgar language ever could. The ninety minutes pass quickly, and I think it's worth seeing.
