This is a truly wonderful film from Sir Carol Reed, one that I’m sure would have pleased Charles Dickens immensely. Mark Lester is perfectly suited to play the timid young man at the center of the story; he's been raised in a brutal Victorian workhouse environment. His simple request for “more” during dinner leads to him being sold to the local undertaker, and from there he escapes to London, continuing the familiar narrative. Ron Moody gives an exceptional performance as "Fagin," with Shani Wallis portraying "Nancy"; Oliver Reed embodies the villainous "Bill Sikes" and Jack Wild is memorable as the “Artful Dodger,” all of them doing a great job within Lionel Bart’s lively musical adaptation of this story about 19th-century London poverty and brutality. I actually performed in a stage production of this when I was just a boy, and seeing it again now brings back almost every line of dialogue—and the strange stares I received on the bus while still wearing my stage makeup!
