I feel very connected to Oliver! Charles Dickens’ well-known story about an orphan boy, Oliver Twist, who flees a difficult life to find success and wealth in London, has been turned into a visually appealing musical. It's surprising how charming and pleasant a tale from such a gifted writer as Dickens can be. This is certainly true of Carol Reed’s memorable 1968 Best Picture and Best Director Winner. It doesn't stick closely to the original story; those wanting that should watch David Lean's excellent 1948 adaptation instead, but with lots of lovely songs and dancing, this version of Oliver is a wonderful experience for everyone. The performers are all very good, especially Ron Moody as Fagin, Oliver Reed who seems to be portraying Bill Sykes in a way, Mark Lester playing Oliver, and Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger. Lionel Bart’s music numbers are as memorable as they are enjoyable. The 1960s wasn't kind to movie musicals; many of them ended up being long and boring. However, Oliver! stands out as one of the best examples in the genre, a genuinely uplifting film that is certain to get your toes tapping and put a smile on your face.
