It felt inevitable that Disney would adapt this well-known Charles Dickens tale, but considering how lacking it is in any real shadows or a sense of unease, this overly bright and animal-filled movie doesn’t quite click for me. The kitten at the center of the story finds herself taken in by a group of dogs who, similar to "Fagin's Boys" in the novel, get involved in minor offenses on behalf of their leader, “Fagin.” He himself is constantly worried about the villainous "Sykes." When "Sykes" realizes that "Oliver" has been welcomed into an affluent household, he demands that "Fagin" devise a scheme to kidnap "Jenny" from her grand estate so he can demand money from her father. It’s up to “Oliver” and his dog friends to stop this wicked plot. While the animation is well-done, and songs by artists like Barry Manilow and Dan Hartman contribute to keeping the pleasant film moving forward—though they aren't particularly memorable—the whole thing feels overly simplistic and manufactured for what started as a more significant piece of English literature. Little ones might enjoy it, though; it’s quite cheerful and celebrates loyalty, cooperation, and friendship, with a few amusing moments here and there.
