What happens when danger arrives at your home? In 1906, a father and his son living on an isolated farm in the Oklahoma Territory offer shelter to an injured man, which unintentionally draws the attention of three individuals posing as law enforcement. Chaos quickly follows. Tim Blake Nelson portrays the aging farmer, while Stephen Dorff embodies the leader of this group. "Old Henry," released in 2021, features Trace Adkins in a brief appearance—not exactly encouraging, given that some of his recent Westerns have fallen short. I’m referring to films like “Stagecoach: The Texas Jack Story” and “The Virginian,” though “Traded” and “Hickok” were considerably better, even if they weren't outstanding. Fortunately, "Old Henry" proved to be a pleasant surprise. Like those other contemporary Westerns, it was produced with limited resources, but strong writing and performances elevate the film. If you blended the fundamental premise of “Echoes of War,” the Eastern landscapes from “The Long Riders,” the somber atmosphere of “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” along with the feel of those modestly budgeted Trace Adkins Westerns, it would give you a sense of what to expect here. I’ll refrain from elaborating further because there are worthwhile discoveries awaiting viewers. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 38 minutes and was filmed in Watertown, Tennessee, approximately 45 miles east of Nashville. GRADE: A-/B+
