Bong Joon-ho has delivered another exceptional film. I had some reservations before seeing Okja, wondering if it would simply be a sentimental family story centered on a child’s strong bond with an animal raised on a farm. Now, I'm struck by how Bong consistently creates films that are both emotionally resonant and politically complex. If you’re familiar with his approach and talent for understated commentary, you’ll recognize this as another outstanding work similar to The Host. The underlying message is apparent without being heavy-handed, and the more nuanced aspects are characteristic of Bong's style. I suspect some viewers might misunderstand certain decisions, especially regarding Gyllenhaal’s character and performance, but those who understand Bong’s social and political viewpoints will likely value his choices. For those unfamiliar with his work, all of Bong’s movies share specific qualities. These include obvious components like humor (even in the most serious moments), suspense, emotional depth, a critique of human behavior, and a portrayal of governmental or corporate irresponsibility. However, these elements are reinforced by subtle details woven throughout his films—like hidden markers—that convey important messages without explicitly stating them. Beyond that, and for those who prefer less analytical movie watching, there’s always an engaging narrative and beautiful visuals. Okja is no different. The only downside is that it's already been released; I’ve seen it once and now face a wait of perhaps two or three years until another Bong film becomes available. I’ve watched The Host at least ten times, and could watch it again immediately. I plan to see Okja at least twice more with the people I usually share his movies with, and it won't feel like an obligation. In my view, Bong is one of the most reliable filmmakers ever, and that record continues with Okja.
