What if the ultimate power showed up and gave you something to do? In "Oh, God!" a grocery store manager—played by John Denver—is visited by what appears to be an elderly man (George Burns), who turns out to be God. He’s given the job of letting people know that God is present, concerned, and wants us to resolve our problems on Earth through peace and love instead of violence and hatred. Teri Garr portrays the manager's wife. "Oh, God!" from 1977 is a comedy-fantasy that I initially found very funny. It does become more serious as it goes along, touching on religious groups and hypocrisy, but still manages to be amusing. As a movie intended for a wide audience, don’t anticipate deep discussions of complex theological subjects such as sin, divine punishment, humanity's desire for everlasting life, or the possibility of eternal suffering. There might be a brief, clever remark about some of these topics, but not much more than that. If you're okay with that, it’s an enjoyable fantasy film that really shows its mid-70s origins in every scene. The core idea is also believable: if the ultimate power appeared (in one form or another) and gave you a task, you would feel obligated to complete it, even if it meant facing things like mockery and losing your job. Denver, who’s usually known as a musician, is surprisingly good, and the conclusion is genuinely touching. A second film was released in 1980 with a similar lighthearted style, but centered on a young girl and wasn't quite as funny, though it’s worth watching if you enjoyed this first one. The third and final movie, "Oh, God! You Devil," came out in 1984 and involves someone resembling Barry Manilow transforming into a heartthrob rock star like Rick Springfield after making an agreement with the devil. It has similarities to “The Rose,” but as a comedy, and is just as good as this original film. The movie’s length is 1 hour, 38 minutes, and filming took place in Burbank and nearby locations including Long Beach, Los Angeles, Van Nuys, and North Hollywood. GRADE: B
