This feels like it could be my favorite Jafar Panahi film so far because it uses humor to critique what's happening in Iran today. It’s an important date for sports fans since the national team is playing Bahrain for a place in the 2006 World Cup. Officially, girls are not allowed into the stadium due to concerns about how men might behave, but some of them aren't going to let that stop them. They try different tricks to get past the scalpers, the staff, and the security forces who are keeping a close watch. A few manage to sneak in, while others are caught and put in a temporary holding area right next to the field—but they still can’t actually watch the game. At first, the girls ask one of their guards to describe what's happening on the field, then another needs to use the bathroom – the men's room, no less; and then my favorite character appears dressed as a confident soldier (Mahnaz Zabihi), who actually made it into a seat in the VIP section before being discovered. She’s definitely athletic. Their guards don’t seem very intimidating, and as the girls tease them and the match goes on, you get the impression they aren't even sure why they're there or why these young women will be turned over to the vice police after the game. Maybe if their team wins, the girls can take advantage of the confusion in the city and avoid getting penalized. It’s more of a chuckle-worthy situation than laugh-out-loud comedy. The variety of fans shown highlights how diverse female football supporters are, just as much as any group of male fans could, with colorful language and cigarette smoking included! What also works well is the acting—it all seems very genuine, and based on how the camera followed them, it’s likely there was some improvisation involved. This demonstrates that you don't need to be overly serious or profound to make fun of a flawed rule, and I appreciated the straightforwardness of this film.
