The wealthy pharmaceutical executive Suárez (José Luis Gómez) grapples with how he’ll be remembered and decides to commission a film based on a book he hasn't bothered to read, employing the services of eccentric filmmaker Lola (Penélope Cruz). She assembles actors Iván (Oscar Martínez) and Félix (Antonio Banderas), who couldn't be more different—a thoughtful, academic performer versus a celebrated Hollywood star with all the trappings that go along with it. Lola hopes their conflict will add some excitement to her project, which it certainly does for this film! One is an instructor of acting, deliberate and thoughtful; the other, a playboy who has received numerous awards and comes with a whole lot of baggage. What follows is two hours of genuinely amusing verbal clashes, interspersed with darkly humorous moments as the actors engage in gamesmanship—with each other and with Lola. They even include the producer's daughter, Diana (Irene Escolar), who participates in a steamy kissing scene with the director while her father watches, clearly taken aback. The film moves along briskly, with very little downtime, culminating in an ending that I found completely pleasing. It runs a bit long, but it’s a delightful parody of the movie business, ridiculing the superficiality and affected intelligence of those involved, often to genuinely funny effect. Seeing it on a large screen isn't essential—most of the action takes place indoors during rehearsals—but if you have the chance to watch, I don’t think you’ll regret it. Penélope Cruz’s hairstyle seems to possess a personality all its own as well.
