Samuel L. Pierce’s directorial debut, Off The Line, centers on Mark Stevenson (also Pierce), a young inline speed skater, and explores his journey alongside his friend Jake Flyer (Forrest Campbell) as they search for a coach and funding to compete in the European Grand Prix 24-hour race—a narrative echoing the Rocky formula with a montage feel. The film showcases characters facing setbacks while maintaining enthusiasm for repetitive training until the competition begins. Numerous extended sequences focus on discussions about speed skating, interspersed with footage of the sport itself; this might appeal to someone particularly interested in that activity. It's possible this would make a decent backdrop for a speed skating coach’s students needing to complete paperwork during practice sessions, though I personally don’t know much about speed skating beyond what I gathered from watching it. The film contains several drawn-out scenes with awkward dialogue; the sound design could have benefited from some adjustments, and the camera work and overall production quality were passable—understandable given that it appears to be a project made by a small team, which is something an indie film enthusiast can usually overlook. I found the portrayal of the female characters troubling, leading me to question whether those involved in making the movie have had any interaction with women or girls. They come across as little more than set dressing. That aspect proved to be the most difficult part of experiencing the film; I prefer a well-developed ensemble cast. Despite its shortcomings, it’s remarkable that Samuel L. Pierce managed to complete a full-length feature film exhibiting all the characteristics of a finished and unified motion picture.
