Off Limits (also known as Saigon) feels like a lost piece of cinema concerning the Vietnam War; I don’t often encounter discussions about it online, and it's rarely brought up when people talk about films related to that era. At its core, this is a police procedural—a whodunit—centered on two officers working in Saigon during the war as they investigate the murders of prostitutes targeting a high-ranking official. What elevates the film beyond mediocrity is the wartime setting, which adds depth and complexity. It’s not just about solving a crime; we also witness the unsettling intrusion of the war itself into the investigation. The acting is quite good, with Gregory Hines and Willem Dafoe delivering solid performances as our weary police partners from the beginning. Fred Ward, Keith David (keep an eye out for his brief role!), and Scott Glenn contribute to a generally engaging supporting cast; Glenn’s performance particularly stands out, leaving a strong impression during a superb interrogation scene that takes place on an airplane. It's a gritty film with interesting qualities, and it deserves more recognition. It doesn't reinvent the genre, and it isn’t something you’d repeatedly watch for excitement, but it is satisfying.
