Carol Reed demonstrates the power of simplicity with this film. James Mason delivers an outstanding performance as a leader of an IRA group planning a textile mill robbery to maintain their financial support. During their getaway, he sustains a serious gunshot wound and must find medical attention while evading both the police and his girlfriend, "Kathleen," portrayed by Kathleen Ryan. The film distinguishes itself through its nuanced portrayal of events, which are often harsh on all sides as the situation closes in on the fugitive. Supporting characters, particularly Robert Newton’s performance as “Lukey,” contribute significantly to the raw authenticity of this pursuit, along with the unsettling Belfast visuals and the snow. It's remarkable how impactful the use of snow is! The dialogue is minimal; much of the impact—and our understanding of it—comes from the gradually unfolding narrative, with Mason carrying a significant burden as he moves through his city in search of assistance and refuge. Reed refrains from taking a position; we are left to form our own judgments, which proves to be a challenging but clever element of the film.
