I hadn’t really seen Steven Soderbergh’s version until recently, though it came out not long after Frank Sinatra passed away. Since then, I've come to value his work significantly, initially as a revolutionary jazz singer and later for his acting roles. I bought the set containing both Milestone’s original film and Soderbergh’s three-disc collection, and having invested time in Milestone’s movies and Sinatra’s performances, I thought I’d check out the Rat Pack's take on it. The actors bring a real sense of ease and enjoyment to everything, and it’s very pleasant to experience. Angie Dickinson and Shirley MacLaine are also wonderful additions, as are all the familiar faces from Las Vegas who appear briefly. The bonus features on my DVD—particularly Sinatra and Dickinson reminiscing about filming the movie while he was hosting The Tonight Show—were fantastic and really enhanced my appreciation of it. I would suggest this to anyone who already likes Soderbergh’s version. As talented as Soderbergh is, his film doesn't measure up; contemporary actors are great, but they simply aren't The Rat Pack! Plus, the conclusion is truly remarkable. I’ve always believed that comedy is one of the most difficult forms of entertainment to pull off well and tends to age poorly, yet this one has stood the test of time remarkably well.
