Following an alien invasion that has largely destroyed North America, their focus shifts to Sydney, with a massive force arriving intent on destroying the city and its inhabitants—and possessing far superior technology and military might. Fortunately, a group of determined resistance fighters, joined by some aliens who sympathize with them, are trying to discover how to stop this seemingly inevitable onslaught. The special effects are decent enough; there's an abundance of lasers, spaceships, explosions, and firefights, and the film moves at a brisk pace. However, the acting and dialogue are where it diverges from its resemblance to "Independence Day" (1996), because those aspects are quite poor. Dan Ewing portrays the lead character, “Matt,” but there's considerable conflict among him, "Bartlett" (Temuera Morrison), and "Hayes" (Daniel Gillies), which only adds to the already muddled character development. The film’s length is also excessive; it feels like two or three installments of a subpar limited series combined into one feature. It may have boosted sales of rubber “Sea Devil” masks, but beyond that, this is largely predictable and disappointing from the very beginning.
