It's often suggested that one can pursue their ambitions at any age. But how many of us, as we get older, actually try? As time goes on, it’s easy to feel like life itself is slipping away, taking with it the chances to achieve those goals and leading to a cycle of disappointment, frustration, and sadness. This was true for marathon swimmer Diana Nyad (played by Annette Bening) later in her years. After achieving considerable success as a long-distance open water swimmer when she was younger, she went on to work as an expert commentator for ABC Sports. However, that job didn't provide the same fulfillment as what she felt she was meant to do—an undertaking that made her feel like she’d taken a 30-year detour from her purpose. Things shifted when she decided to return to swimming and attempt the 103-mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida, a dream she had tried but failed at age 28. At 60, she felt confident she could accomplish it, so she began working toward that goal, something many considered unrealistic and impossible for someone her age. Nyad is a determined and persistent person, and with the support of her close friend Bonnie (Jodie Foster), who acted as her often-weary coach, she pushed forward. Directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi tell this true story in an engaging biopic, documenting Nyad’s journey and showing all sides of the celebrated swimmer—as both a heroic role model and someone difficult and stubborn. The storytelling follows a predictable pattern and runs a bit long, but overall, the film offers an authentic look at the demanding experience that Nyad and her team faced, effectively portrayed by Bening and Foster. The movie also explores Nyad’s childhood, showing how she developed her lifelong drive for success and refused to feel sorry for herself when things got hard. It's good to see a film that focuses on an older woman, a demographic often ignored in today's movies, especially one with a character who has something important to share. “Nyad” might not be considered groundbreaking filmmaking, but it does everything possible with what it has, providing viewers with an enjoyable and motivational experience, particularly for those who feel overlooked and have given up on their dreams but still harbor a strong desire to achieve great things.
