Wuchak on Nurse Betty

6/10 · Dec 6, 2023

This quirky film blends genres—dramedy, road movie, crime drama, romantic comedy, and black comedy—in a way that doesn't always quite gel. The story involves a waitress in Kansas, played by Renée Zellweger, who escapes into a daytime soap opera where she envisions a romance with a heroic doctor portrayed by Greg Kinnear. Simultaneously, two criminals, Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock, are pursuing a woman and their leader becomes infatuated with her. "Nurse Betty," released in 2000, doesn't elicit constant laughter, but it’s generally entertaining. The film struggles because its unusual combination of elements leaves audiences unsure how to approach it; this is particularly true given the presence of a jarring scene involving scalping. It becomes clearer when you realize the movie centers on Betty and Charlie and their idealized notions of people they've never encountered. Ultimately, it’s an unconventional film reminiscent of Tarantino’s work—a mixed bag that’s roughly half-good and half-ordinary. The feeling of being “meh” largely stems from its eccentricities. Fortunately, the movie possesses substance and becomes more rewarding with subsequent viewings. The runtime is approximately one hour and 50 minutes, and filming locations include Los Angeles, Durango, Colorado, Grand Canyon, Arizona, and Rome, Italy, where the final scene takes place. GRADE: B-/C+
