Stories about fighting against oppressive rule have the potential to be truly exceptional films, particularly when those stories feel relevant to what’s happening now. John Andreas Andersen's newest film certainly delivers an inspiring and absorbing account centered on that theme. The movie recounts the story of Norwegian resistance fighter Gunnar Sønsteby (1918-2012) (played by Sjur Vatne Brean), showcasing his bravery as he confronted Nazi forces who occupied Norway during World War II. Operating under the codename Number 24 alongside a group of close friends, and guided by British special forces and the Norwegian government in exile located in the UK, Sønsteby organized and spearheaded numerous attacks on German resources within Norway, frequently facing significant danger and substantial personal sacrifice. He also struggled with moral dilemmas, particularly when dealing with Norwegians who had aligned themselves with the Third Reich, some of whom he knew personally. The film portrays Sønsteby’s courageous actions through a series of memories shared during a lecture to students at his former school. His older self (Erik Hivju) recounts these wartime events and attempts to address questions from inquisitive young people who want to understand why he undertook this mission. In doing so, the movie explores the complicated emotions that Norwegians experienced when their lives, freedoms, and national independence were directly threatened. Andersen does a commendable job of presenting the story of this widely admired Norwegian hero, even though the storytelling occasionally feels disjointed, especially during the film’s somewhat slow start. Nevertheless, “Number 24” sheds light on an aspect of World War II that is not well-known beyond Scandinavia, highlighting the courage of ordinary people who stepped up when their liberty and self-determination were jeopardized by ruthless, relentless betrayal. It's a lesson worth remembering, particularly when we find ourselves in precarious circumstances. We should all pay attention to the message conveyed by this significant warning.
