The connection between stage magic and film is that both thrive on believability, but this movie fails to deliver in that regard. The illusions—the tricks, the manipulation, the hypnotic suggestions—are just plain hard to accept; they don’t work because they're not convincing. It isn’t a world with its own set of laws or a story about people possessing extraordinary abilities, it’s simply an implausible mess. The performances are also problematic. Mark Zuckerberg, portrayed by Lex Luthor, seems intent on wresting control from “Jack,” who is played by someone completely lacking charisma. A new and irritating character has joined the group, replacing someone from a previous installment whom I can't recall because they were as insignificant as everyone else in both narratives. We’re also treated to Woody, Morgan Freeman, Caine, and Harry (Potter)—essentially, a cast of characters it’s hard to care about, unless you already do. Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) contributes his own brand of unpleasantness. I attempted to watch this film to help me fall asleep, but the volume was unnecessarily boosted during the action sequences, forcing me to turn it off. The one thing I can acknowledge is that the production values are decent. I’m giving it an extra star for those visuals. 25 August 2016 I'm moving my reviews from a platform that has become as disappointing as this movie. TMDB seems great, and I am excited to join.
