Bette Davis in top form was hard to surpass, and this film stands as one such instance. With skillful portrayals from Claude Rains and Gladys Cooper, we’re given a truly emotional experience. Davis initially appears as the dutiful daughter of Cooper, until she meets Rains' "Dr. Jaquith," who believes he can assist this previously timid woman in discovering some direction. She is sent on a cruise where she encounters the married "Jerry" (Paul Henried), and while a romantic connection develops, it seems destined to fail; only after a lengthy sequence of dramatic events do we start to reach any sort of resolution. Irving Rapper succeeds in letting Max Steiner’s music and Casey Robinson's script enable the actors to shape characters—particularly Davis—that are easy to connect with. I’ve never been Henreid's biggest admirer; I always thought he was somewhat bland, but he fits well here, as does Cooper delivering a strong performance as her mother. Having recently watched it on a large screen again after nearly 80 years, the film retains its flair and wonderfully measured sense of drama. It’s excellent viewing.
