It’s a film with some appeal but not much originality, though it functions nicely for families and should be rediscovered. This production from the 90s, which has largely been forgotten, is an enjoyable one to watch alongside grandparents and kids, and it warrants another look and appreciation. I can see why it ended up among those films that are rarely remembered: it’s not a standout piece of work, not something that will stick with you for a lifetime. Still, it does exactly what it sets out to do. The story is pleasant enough, even if the concept isn't groundbreaking: four friends reconnect after many years apart, and their childhood bond strengthens through this reunion, filled with nostalgia and fond recollections. There are countless films about similar situations and themes; there’s nothing new here, but it’s executed well. The film features four capable adult actresses (Demi Moore, Rita Wilson, Rosie O'Donnell and Melanie Griffith) alongside four up-and-coming ones (Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann and Ashleigh Aston Moore), as the four main characters are portrayed both in their present day and at puberty, twenty years earlier. This is a clever idea, but truthfully, there’s little resemblance between the younger actresses and their adult counterparts; Roberta's character is the most obvious example where I didn’t notice any physical similarity between Ricci and O'Donnell. Of course, people change… but not drastically. Aside from this oddity, the performances of all eight actors are quite good, and each has ample opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Technically, the film isn’t particularly remarkable. The attempt to recreate the 1970s doesn’t really work because it's not convincing; there aren’t enough details in the sets or props to establish the era in which the story takes place. The setting has a certain charm and good taste (I especially liked the gas lamps), and the tree house is lovely, as are the filming locations and cinematography. But that's all there is to it.
