Jean-Luc Godard (played by Guillaume Marbeck) feels stifled being overshadowed by directors like Truffaut and Chabrol, so he persuades producer Georges de Beauregard (Bruno Dreyfürst) to let him direct his own film. “Beau-Beau” hesitantly agrees, granting him a short timeframe and very little money for the project. It took some courage on their part because Godard didn’t have actors, a crew, or even a story to begin with. He first needed to get people involved, reaching out to young boxer Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin) and established actress Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutsch). Then came the question of a script – maybe Chabrol and Truffaut could help? Pierre Rissient (Benjamin Clery) took on the difficult task of assisting, though it proved even more challenging for the continuity person who struggled to keep up with Godard’s spontaneous creative process. Finally, wartime photographer Coutard (Matthieu Penchinat) joined the team to try and capture glimpses of brilliance emerging from their master's unconventional filmmaking style. The movie follows this setup as a genuinely humorous look at how his low-budget film “Breathless” (1960) came together. His unpredictable approach caused considerable frustration for “Beau-Beau,” who felt like his money was being squandered, and for the cast, who were largely unsure of what they were doing or what "À bout de souffle" would ultimately be about until its final moments. It’s an enjoyable and charming portrayal of the diverse world of filmmaking during a period of French cinema's most vibrant and inventive era, with Marbeck leading a talented ensemble that brings a warmly quirky quality to their portrayals as their three weeks together gradually took shape. I have a feeling there are some embellishments along the way, but they contribute to an entertaining mix of methods and aesthetics, all beautifully filmed from inside a mobile post office.
