Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman have an undeniable chemistry in this familiar Hitchcock narrative about spying and love. Following her father’s condemnation for being a Nazi, she ("Alicia") has turned to alcohol and is spiraling when "Devlin" (Grant) presents her with an opportunity to regain some dignity. Her task involves getting close to people associated with her father's past and sharing information with the CIA in Rio. Upon arriving there, she encounters "Alexander," a Nazi who’s been pursuing her, and at the request of her supervisor (Louis Calhern), she finds herself marrying him. From this point on, a carefully constructed story unfolds involving deception and disloyalty, balanced by some amusing moments and a touch of romance—predictably, she and "Devlin" develop feelings for each other. The cinematography is impressive, both sweeping and personal; Roy Webb’s score is ideal, and Hitchcock makes the most of Ben Hecht's story. I recently watched this film on a large screen, and it definitely deserves another viewing!
