I believe I’m watching the right film—the one I stumbled upon on HBO years ago when I was a kid and staying up late attempting to record Robot Jox (or something similar). The attempt ended with hours of HBO being recorded onto VHS due to accidentally starting the recording too early, then falling asleep on the couch. Regardless of how I first saw it, honestly, it turned out to be significantly better than Robot Jox, even though they’re completely different kinds of movies. Basically, twin siblings—a male and a female—who share a psychic link draw you into a murder mystery that features surprisingly good cinematography and entertaining, exaggerated slasher-style killings; it's a giallo. Giallo films always reminded me of those cheap paperbacks that used to fill the closets and basements where I grew up, and now they’re a bit of an annoyance, crammed into every nightstand and bookshelf in my current home. So there’s definitely something appealing about this horror mystery theme. A park ranger in the US senses his sister's murder—she was a model living in Italy—and travels from somewhere in the American West to Rome without seeming tired at all. He immediately starts searching for the killer, while also dealing with beautiful women who worked alongside his sister and are now being murdered one after another. It’s essentially like your typical Friday the 13th movie, but with a more involved storyline. What's not to appreciate? Films like this are like those pulp novels—you enjoy them once, get some entertainment out of it, and then place them on that little ledge under your end table because you were raised not to throw books away, even though you know you’ll never read them again. And there they sit, just waiting for a random person to ask, "Hey, can I borrow that?"
