DanDare on North by Northwest

7/10 · May 20, 2017

North by Northwest has become well-known for its iconic set pieces, like the Mount Rushmore sequence and the scene involving the crop dusting airplane. At its heart, this is a story centered on mistaken identity; advertising executive Roger Thornhill, portrayed by Cary Grant, finds himself confused with someone named George Kaplan—a deception orchestrated by individuals connected to an unspecified foreign power, likely Russian. The complication arises because Kaplan isn't real; he’s a fabricated persona developed by the CIA as a means of exposing the film’s antagonist, Vandamm (James Mason), who is sophisticated yet dangerous, and his associates. Among them is Leonard (Martin Landau), Vandamm’s peculiar right-hand man, who is also after Thornhill. To clear his name, Thornhill has to avoid being caught by both those pursuing him and the authorities, as he's now a wanted man. A lovely blonde woman named Eve (Eva-Marie Saint) offers assistance during this nationwide pursuit, but she’s not simply an innocent observer; there’s a possibility she is involved with Vandamm. This movie provides a thrilling escape, blending suspense with moments of humor, and Grant was naturally skilled at delivering that kind of comedic relief. The film does feel somewhat stretched out—it could have benefitted from being about fifteen minutes shorter—and the reasons behind the villains' actions are not entirely clear.
