The film “Normal” struck me as an attempt to incorporate contemporary social awareness into a standard action movie formula, but in doing so, it misses its mark entirely. The narrative feels driven more by a particular political viewpoint and overt messaging than by developing characters or creating a logical storyline. Portrayals of Asian yakuza are largely stereotypical and serve as disposable adversaries, while other figures are presented with greater nuance and empathy; this creates an awkward and hypocritical feel to the violence, falling far short of any insightful commentary. Even the more skillfully executed action sequences can't disguise how superficial, repetitive, and condescending the entire production is, ultimately leaving me feeling simply weary and annoyed instead of engaged.
