There’s a certain feel reminiscent of "Twin Peaks" as a new sheriff comes to Normal after his predecessor dies unexpectedly. Ulysses (Bob Odenkirk) seems incredibly relaxed and anticipates a quiet time, mostly dealing with minor disagreements between business owners and enduring the sound of his deputy's leather jacket. Then the bank alarm sounds. Could it possibly be a robbery? The entire police force rushes over, only to find something—which I won’t spoil. This new lawman quickly finds himself in a difficult situation facing advanced weaponry, an enormous pile of gold, a man with a missing portion of his pinky finger, and some very displeased Yakuza on their way. It appears it's going to be a lengthy night in Normal. Throughout the story, we get a fairly intricate look at the sheriff’s personal life as he tries to find someone who can help him in this town that turns out to be far from ordinary. Odenkirk excels at portraying understated characters and delivers a strong performance here, but the other roles don't quite measure up. Henry Winkler, for example, has a brief appearance as mayor that barely registers. The final fifteen minutes are energetic, chaotic, and genuinely entertaining, and the ninety minutes go by without much trouble, but I’m not convinced this will stick with me—moose aside.
