Jordan Peele’s 'Nope' arrives carrying considerable weight because of his earlier films. ‘Get Out’ redefined horror movies, moving the genre away from being simply about thrills and adrenaline rushes toward social commentary and prompting viewers to consider deeper questions as the stories unfold. ‘Nope’ follows this trend, and it could be argued that it tries to weave together story elements, symbolism, and meaning in a more expansive way than his previous work. Focusing on the concept of ‘spectacle,’ Peele effectively demonstrates its risks and how society's fixation with being in the spotlight can be damaging, even fatal. With this film, Peele adopts a science fiction approach, demonstrating strong storytelling skills while frequently challenging audience assumptions. Beyond the film’s underlying message, notable aspects include the cinematography and performances from the main characters—particularly OJ, Emerald, and Angel. Peele has developed some complex and relatable characters, and the actors' chemistry is something I expect to remember for a long time. Still, I feel that the movie sometimes puts aside plot and narrative progression in its determination to emphasize the central theme of ‘spectacle.’ While I appreciated each storyline (OJ’s with the alien creature and Gordie’s with Jupe), it was difficult to grasp how they connected narratively. It often seemed like those stories could have been more effective if they hadn't involved each other. Beyond that, I had questions about OJ’s reasons for wanting to capture or eliminate the animal, whether the final shot was believable, what the animal’s nature and behavior were, and whether OJ lived or died—or if that was left open to interpretation. The film's conclusion also felt a bit underwhelming; the animal's death wasn't as impactful as expected. However, this could be linked to the overall message about ‘spectacle,’ since finales are often not what we anticipate. Ultimately, I believe 'Nope' is a strong movie that will likely improve with repeated viewings to fully understand Peele’s intentions.
