I tend to feel uneasy when a movie's promotion focuses heavily on the director rather than the performers... Frankly, I didn’t really grasp what all the excitement was about concerning either aspect of this one. A quiet "OJ" (Daniel Kaluuya) shares a home with his spirited sister "Emerald" (Keke Palmer) at an isolated horse ranch that supplies animals for film productions. When unusual noises begin and the horses start acting strangely, then vanishing altogether, they are puzzled. They head into town where they encounter local enthusiast "Torres" (Brandon Perea), who is brimming with alien conspiracy theories, and he installs some security cameras for them. What follows is a peculiar, somewhat clumsily structured science fiction story that takes an extended period to gain momentum; and when it finally does, the film progresses at a steady pace with rather repetitive visuals, sparse conversation, and a resolution that elicited a laugh from me—though I’m not certain that Jordan Peele intended that. The storyline brought back memories of something from the 1960s "Outer Limits"! There's definitely some beautiful scenery to appreciate in this California valley, but overall I was completely let down by this film; I thought the most enjoyable parts were in the preview.
